City of Newport Canvassing Authority

The Newport Canvassing Authority is charged with conducting all elections in the City of Newport.

The Authority is comprised of three bi-partisan members appointed by the City Council.

The current Authority members are David F. Roderick, Jr.; Chairman; Robert J. Perrello and Richard E. O’Neill, Clerk.

The new Newport City Council now led by Mayor Stephen C. Waluk were elected on November 2, 2010 and were sworn into office on January 2, 2011.

Under the direction of the State Board of Elections, and in cooperation with the Secretary of State, the Authority is involved in all phases of the electoral process, from voter registration to tallying the votes after the polls close on election day.

There are approximately 13,693 registered voters in the City of Newport. In November, 2002 the electors voted that there should be four councilors-at-large and three ward councilors.

It is the goal of the Authority to ensure the will of the majority of the City's citizens is accurately voiced in each Municipal, State and General Election; and to serve the City Council and the citizens of Newport by registering as many new voters as possible and encourage all citizens to vote.
